Structure of Qualification
To achieve the ILM Level 2 Award in Leadership and Team Skills, you need a total of 3 credits from a choice of units.

Mandatory Unit: Developing Yourself as a Team Leader 1 Credit
- In this unit we aim to look at ways in which you can keep developing your skills and knowledge. The unit is divided into two sections. In the first section we reflect on what a team leader does. In thinking about this we'll be thinking about the role, and also the accountability that the team leader has within an organisation. In the second section we're going to think about ways to identify needs for development and then how these needs can be met.
Improving the Performance of the Work Team 1 Credit
- In this unit we’re going to look at a specific part of the team leader's role - the role of 'motivator'. Motivation is related to the overall performance of the team. Here we’re not just going to look at motivation - we’ll also look at the wider role of performance management. We'll think about the ways that a team leader should manage performance, and how the team leader should address any issues of concern in relation to performance. We'll then look at motivation, and setting objectives. Finally, we'll look at some specific examples of problems that can occur with performance.
Developing the Work Team 1 Credit
- In this unit we'll look at the nature of the team. A team is made up of a number of people, who typically come from different backgrounds with different skills and experiences. The team leader is responsible for getting that team together and making them operate effectively. The team leader is also responsible for looking after the people in the team, and helping and advising them as necessary. So, we’ll start this unit by thinking about the definition of a team, how it develops, and what responsibilities there are in the team. In the second section we’ll focus more on the development of the team and think about how we can identify and meet training and development needs.
Working within Organisational and Legal Guidelines 1 Credit
- It's always important to ensure that all we do in the workplace abides by the law. There are a number of different laws that are relevant to our work - consumer law, company law, health and safety law. In this unit we’re concerned with employment law. The area of employment law has grown considerably over recent years, and is an increasingly complex area. Although, it would not be possible for us to cover all that there is in employment law in this unit, we’re going to try to understand four important areas of employment law.
Understanding Change in the Workplace 2 Credits
- In this unit we’ll focus on this topic of change. We’ll think about the nature of the changes that are constantly happening in our organisations, and we’ll try to understand why those changes happen. We’re then going to think about the team leader's role in managing change.
Maintaining a Healthy and Safe Work Environment 1 Credit
- The focus of this unit is ensuring that employees are healthy and safe at work. However, the scope of this unit does also reach beyond just health and safety. We’ll also be looking at the 'health' of the environment, and how organisations impact this. In recent years there's been a growth in the concern that organisations and individuals are damaging the environment. Hence, we’ll be looking at how this can be reduced.
Briefing the Work Team 1 Credit
- In this unit we’re going to look at the skills required to give a relatively formal team briefing. We’re not going to presume that the briefing is just to the team - we’re going to think about others who might want to attend the meeting. We’re also going to look at ways to give a presentation within the team briefing, and consider visual aids that might be used.
Business Improvement Techniques 2 Credits
- In this unit our focus will be the never-ending mission to achieve. We’ll start by looking at issues associated with quality and the need for continuous improvement. In looking at this we’ll thinking about ways in which the team leader can encourage contributions from the team.
Planning and Monitoring Work 2 Credits
- The task of 'getting the job done' is what we focus on in this unit. We'll start the unit by looking at the process of setting objectives and targets and then think about how this is done, and some of the difficulties that can occur with setting targets. We’re also going to think about policies and procedures, and how they influence the work that the team does. We'll then take some time to think about the team. We use the term 'team', but we have to acknowledge that the team is a group of people made up of different skills and abilities, strengths and weaknesses. How do we bring this group together to ensure they can work effectively as a team?
Solving problems and Making Decisions 2 Credits
- In this unit, you'll come to understand how to describe a problem, its nature, scope and impact. You'll learn how to gather and interpret information that will let you identify possible solutions to a problem, and discover how to make a decision between them. You'll consider how to plan the implementation and communication of this decision. You'll also explore monitoring and review techniques that can be used to gauge the effectiveness of a solution.
